I am an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. My research focuses on the philosophy of science, especially the role of idealization in biological and chemical modeling. Much of this work focuses on models drawn from evolutionary ecology and structural chemistry.

Other work includes a characterization of modeling tradeoffs, defense of the importance of robustness analysis, the nature of the chemical bond, the dvision of cognitive labor, and the psychological basis of the public understanding of science. My research is described in more detail here.

Besides my primary affiliation in philosophy, I am also a faculty fellow at Fisher-Hassenfeld College House and a faculty affiliate of IRCS, the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science and CCN, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience.
