When I say I teach poetry, the response is often "I hate poetry." I say, "nobody hates poetry; either you have been reading the wrong poems or you have had the wrong teachers. Give me a chance to change your mind. You'd be surprised how often I can." Next to reading and teaching poetry and drama, my favorite activity is to order actors around on stage. I am quite good with good actors, but I am very good with bad ones.
