Research
My research ranges from specific moral questions in medical and research ethics—e.g. Is the requirement to respect autonomy the only or primary reason to allow patients to make their own treatment decisions?—to abstract metaethical questions—e.g. What is the best account of an “undercutting” reason? In all of my research, I am especially interested by the interplay between practical moral problems and philosophical analysis or theory. My current central research program is to develop a philosophical theory of hope and explore its implications for how people relate to medicine and medical institutions.
