Each candidate is counted only once, for the year in which
he or she completed the degree. The tenure-track offer may have
been secured in the year of the degree, or before or after. For
MD/PhD students, acceptance into residency is viewed as the
equivalent of a tenure-track offer, as is, for any student,
a multi-year contract teaching in a Medical School. Similarly,
a secure contract at a non-tenuring educational institution
is considered tenure-track equivalent.
Success rate: 80% success at securing tenure-track
offers among those who sought tenure-track jobs (national market). Not
all offers were accepted; candidates sometimes chose non-tenure-track
positions for personal reasons. Those who did not seek tenure-track jobs
may have had personal or professional reasons (including two PhD graduates
who entered the private sector, two who went on to Law School, and three JD/PhDs
who accepted positions in law firms). Since 1995, 100% of
those who have sought academic employment have gained either
a tenure-track equivalent (29/36) or other job in field (7/36).
Past success is no guarantee of future success. Nonetheless, the Department's
graduates have a strong record in securing academic employment.
Schools at which candidates represented above took tenure-track jobs.
