J.D./Ph.D. PROGRAM: Law and Philosophy
Plan of Study
This plan must be coordinated with the regular rules and requirements for each separate degree (the J.D., and the Ph.D. in philosophy).
Year 1
Fall: 3 Philosophy courses Spring: 4 Philosophy courses
Year 2
Fall: 3 regular Philosophy courses
Spring: 2 regular Philosophy courses plus 1 Law School course ("Jurisprudence List") counting toward Philosophy 15 course requirement (or Law
course in Fall)
Teaching both semesters.
The Distribution Requirement in Philosophy is to be met by the end of the second year.
Year 3
Fall: 4 prescribed first year law classes and legal writing
Spring: 4 prescribed first year law classes and legal writing
Year 4
27 hours (approximately 8 courses) of Law School classes,
which is the Law School's minimum.
2 Law School classes ("Expanded List") from year 3 or year 4 count toward
Philosophy Department 15 course requirement. 3 additional Law School classes count toward Graduate Council's 20 course requirement for the Ph.D. Philosophy
teaching requirment completed by teaching both semesters.
Year 5
Fall: 14 hours Law School classes (4 courses)
Spring: 1 Law School Independent Study; Phil 999 and Phil 700 (Diss Workshop) - which also count for 6 hours of Law School credit; Preliminary Exam for Ph.D. Teaching one semester.
Year 6
Dissertation work (in residence)
