FICHTEANA

An Occasional Newsletter of the North American Fichte Society

No. 12, April 2002

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND (DESKTOP) PUBLISHER

Dear friends and colleagues,

Since the last issue of this newsletter (August 2001) Fichte studies have continued to expand and prosper around the world, as a glance at this new issue will confirm. The prospects for the future are even brighter.

Among new publications, pride of place must go to the most recent addition to Reihe II of the Bavarian Academy Critical Edition of Fichte's Werke, Nachgelassene Schriften 1811-1812. Equally noteworthy is the separate publication, edited by Reinhard Lauth under the title Ultima Inquirenda, of Part III of Fichte's Diarum. This previously unpublished manuscript, which spans the period from October 15, 1813 to January 16, 1814, represents the final version of the Wissenschaftslehre and will be of great interest to anyone interested in the latter.

After a long delay, the selected proceedings of the 1995 Shakertown conference, sponsored by the North American Fichte and devoted to the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre have finally been published by Humanity Books, and the Proceedings of the 1997 Marquette conference, devoted to the "later Jena Wissenschaftslehre," will be published later this year by Northwestern University Press. Information concerning both of these volumes is contained in this issue. With the publication of these volumes we can now turn our attention to editing and publishing the volumes based on the Montréal and San Diego conferences of 1999 and 2001.

A number of conferences and special events related to Fichte were also held over the past half year, including a semester-long series of lectures at the University of Munich. For details on this and other recent events conferences, see below. This issue also contains announcements and calls for papers for several conferences to be held in the future, including the Seventh Biennial Conference of the North American Fichte Society, which will be held in Chicago in March 2003 on the topic "Fichte and German Idealism" and the next International Fichte Congress of the Internationale Fichte Gesellschaft, which will be held in Munich in October of 2003 on the topic "Fichte's Legacy."

As always, information concerning things Fichtean, as well as suggestions, corrections, comments, and criticisms regarding the content and format of this newsletter are welcome. Detailed information concerning recent and forthcoming publications and conferences – and, if possible, copies of the former – are particularly solicited. Information concerning recent dissertations on Fichte is also requested. Contributors to this issue of Fichteana include: Kevin Zanelotti, Günter Zöller, Marco Ivaldo, Tom Rockmore, Ludovicus De Vos, Jacinto Rivera de Rosales, Faustino Fabbianelli, Matteo Vincenzo d'Alfonso, Erich Fuchs, Franck Fischbach, and Scott Scribner. The editor would like to express his gratitude to Erich Fuchs for proofreading the final version of this issue.

CALL FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS AND REQUEST FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Constantly rising costs of producing and mailing Fichteana make it necessary to trim the surface mailing list from time to time. If you are currently receiving this newsletter in hard copy form and would like to continue to receive it in this form, please take the time to notify the editor of your continuing interest. Otherwise, it will be assumed that you do not wish to receive future issues of Fichteana in the mail. Subscription to Fichteana will continue to be free to anyone who requests it, though non-student subscribers in North America are cordially encouraged to make a small, voluntary financial contribution to help defray the costs of producing and mailing future issues. (Suggested contribution: $15.) Financial contributions are solicited neither from students nor from scholars residing outside of North America. The editor/publisher would like to express his special thanks to everyone who has responded to earlier appeals for contributions. Without your support it would not be possible to continue publishing and distributing this newsletter. (An asterisk after your name on the address label indicates that your contribution has been received and recorded.)

Please note: all recipients with access to the World Wide Web or the ability to receive e-mail attachments are urged to cancel their subscriptions to the hard copy version of Fichteana and to access it henceforth through the NAFS Website (see below). Please notify the editor if you have web access to this newsletter or are able to receive it as an e-mail attachment.
