Dear friends and colleagues,

1994 and 1995 were banner years for Fichte studies not only in North America but around the world, as is indicated by the exceptional number of conferences on Fichte's philosophy that were held during these two years and by the number of special "Fichte issues" of professional journals that were published or announced. This issue of Fichteana includes reports on several of these conferences and summaries of the contents of many of these new publications, as well as information concerning new editions of Fichte's works, new translations of his writings into various languages, and recent books and articles on or relating to Fichte and the Wissenschaftslehre.

Now that the bicenntenial anniversary of the first publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre has come and gone, it is to be expected that the (officially sanctioned and sponsored) attention of Fichte scholars will be shifting to the lectures and writings composed in the period immediately following the publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre, a distinguished group that includes the Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo (1796/99), Grundlage des Naturrechts (1796/97); System der Sittenlehre (1798), and the various writings associated with the Atheismusstreit of 1798/99. Indeed, the "Second Jena Wissenschaftslehre" will be theme of the next meeting of the North American Fichte Society and will no doubt be the focus of other international conferences to be held between now and the end of the century. The next five years promise to very interesting ones indeed for anyone with a special interest in the development of post-Kantian philosophy.

As always, information concerning things Fichtean, as well as suggestions, corrections, comments, and criticisms regarding the content and format of this newsletter are welcome. Any information on recent and forthcoming publications and events is particularly solicited.

The North American Fichte Society was founded in 1991 by Daniel Breazeale and Tom Rockmore, who continue to serve as "Co-Positers" of the same. To date, the activity of the North American Fichte Society has been limited to sponsoring biennial conferences. Our first conference was held in the spring of 1991 on the campus of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh; the second was held in the spring of 1993 on the campus of the University of Denver; and the third was held in the spring of 1995 at Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. The fourth meeting of the North American Fichte Society will be held in the spring of 1997 at Marquette University in Milwaukee.

Selected proceedings of meetings of the North American Fichte Society have been and will continue to be published by Humanities Press International. The selected proceedings of the Duquesne conference, edited by Breazeale and Rockmore under the title Fichte: Historical Contexts/Contemporary Controversies, were published in 1994. The selected proceedings of the Denver conference, edited by Rockmore and Breazeale, will appear shortly under the title New Perspectives on Fichte. The selected proceedings of the Shakertown conference are currently being edited and will appear in a special volume celebrating the bicenntenial of the original publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre.

There are no dues or special membership requirements for the North American Fichte Society. Anyone with an interest in any aspect of the philosophy of J. G. Fichte is welcome to join. The Internationale Johann-Gottlieb-Fichte-Gesellschaft (IFG) was founded in December of 1987 in the Federal Republic of Germany "in partnership with the Japanese Fichte Society." At a meeting of the membership held in conjunction with the recent Jena conference (September 1994), Prof. Wolfgang Schrader was re-elected for a second term as president of the IFG. Elected to the expanded board of directors were Profs. Helmut Girndt, Peter Oesterreich, and Marek Siemek. Prof. Wolfgang Janke was elected Honorary President. The Internationale Fichte-Gesellschaft sponsors frequent meetings and conferences in Germany and other European countries and also publishes the journal Fichte-Studien, plus a series of supplemental monographs (Fichte-Studien, Supplementa). Fichte-Studien. Beiträge zur Geschichte und Systematik der Transzendentalphilosophie is an irregularly appearing publication founded in 1990 by the Internationale Fichte-Gesellschaft and currently edited by Professors Helmut Girndt and Wolfgang H. Schrader. To date, seven issues have appeared. An international conference on the theme "Das Setzen in der ersten Wissenschaftslehre Fichtes" was held in the Palazzo Serra di Cassano, Naples, Italy, April 26-29, 1995. Organized by the Internationales Kooperationsorgan der Fichte-Förschung (Munich), under the direction of Reinhard Lauth, and supported by the Istituto Italiano per gli studi filosofici (Naples), the conference featured numerous papers on the announced theme, as well as interesting series of reports on the current state of research on Fichte around the world. The proceedings of this conference are expected to be published in 1996.

As announced in the last issue of Fichteana, volumes 6 and 19 of what is projected to be a 23 volume Japanese edition of Fichte's Complete Works have now been published (Seitama: Setzu Publishing Co., 1995). The names of the editors were, however, omitted from the previous announcment. They are: R. Lauth, K. Fujisawa, H. Kato, Ch. Kumamoto, and M. Shakabe.

A team of translators and editors is currently at work in Beijing on a five volume edition of Fichte's selected writings in Chinese translations. The first volume, containing writings from the years 1787-1794, was published in 1991. The second, containing writings from the years 1794-1796, appeared in 1993 (824 pp., ISBN 7-1000-01389-5). A third volume covering the period 1796-1800 is now in press.
