FICHTEANA

An Occasional Newsletter of the North American Fichte Society

No. 5, October 1996

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR AND (DESKTOP) PUBLISHER

Dear friends and colleagues,

In comparison to 1994 and 1995, 1996 has been a rather quiet year on the Fichte front, despite the appearance of a volume I/9 of the Gesamtausgabe and the publication of a number of special journal issues and other volumes devoted to Fichte. A few conferences on Fichte were held in Europe, and this issue of Fichteana includes reports on these, as well as information concerning upcoming Fichte conferences, including the fourth biennial meeting of the North American Fichte Society. As usual, this issue also contains summaries of the contents of recent journal issues devoted to Fichte and information concerning new editions of his works, new translations of his writings into various languages, and recent books and articles on or relating to Fichte and the Wissenschaftslehre. Perhaps the most exciting new publication in this field within the past half year is Erich Fuchs edition of the partial transcript of Fichte's original (Zurich) lectures on the Wissenschaftslehre from February, 1794 (see below), recently discovered among the papers of J. K. Lavater.

Now that the bicenntenial anniversary of the first publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre has come and gone, it is to be expected that the (officially sanctioned and sponsored) attention of Fichte scholars will be shifting to the lectures and writings composed in the period immediately following the publication of the Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre, a distinguished group of texts that includes the Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo (1796/99), Grundlage des Naturrechts (1796/97), System der Sittenlehre (1798), and the various writings associated with the Atheismusstreit of 1798/99. Indeed, the "Second Jena Wissenschaftslehre" has already been announced as the theme of the next meeting of the North American Fichte Society, which will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in March of 1997 (see below), and will no doubt be the theme of other international conferences to be held between now and the end of the century. The next five years promise to be very interesting ones indeed for anyone concerned with the development of post-Kantian philosophy.

As always, information concerning things Fichtean, as well as suggestions, corrections, comments, and criticisms regarding the content and format of this newsletter are welcome. Any information on recent and forthcoming publications and events is particularly solicited. I would like to express my thanks to Erich Fuchs, Faustino Oncina Coves, Günter Zöller, Curtis Bowman, Ives Radrizzani, and Christoph Asmuth for their contributions to this issue and to Janet Roccanova for assistance with proof-reading and editing.

THE NORTH AMERICAN FICHTE SOCIETY

The North American Fichte Society was founded -- or "posited" -- in 1991 by Daniel Breazeale and Tom Rockmore, who continue to serve as “Co-Positers” of the same. To date, the activity of the North American Fichte Society has been limited to sponsoring biennial conferences. Our first conference was held in the spring of 1991 on the campus of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh; the second was held in the spring of 1993 on the campus of the University of Denver; and the third was held in the spring of 1995 at Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. The fourth meeting of the North American Fichte Society will be held in the spring of 1997 at Marquette University in Milwaukee (see announcement below).

Selected proceedings of meetings of the North American Fichte Society have been and will continue to be published by Humanities Press International. The selected proceedings of the Duquesne conference, edited by Breazeale and Rockmore under the title Fichte: Historical Contexts/Contemporary Controversies, were published in 1994. The selected proceedings of the Denver conference, edited by Rockmore and Breazeale, were published in 1996 under the title New Perspectives on Fichte. The selected proceedings of the Shakertown conference are currently in production and will appear in 1997, under the title New Studies in Fichte's Foundations of the Entire Wissenschaftslehre (1794/95), ed. Breazeale and Rockmore.

There are no dues or special membership requirements for the North American Fichte Society. Anyone with an interest in any aspect of the philosophy of J. G. Fichte is welcome and encouraged to join. This can be done by contacting either Daniel Breazeale, at the address listed above, or Tom Rockmore, Department of Philosophy, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA 15282, USA (ROCKMORE@DUQ3.CC.DUQ.EDU).

THE INTERNATIONAL FICHTE SOCIETY

The Internationale Johann-Gottlieb-Fichte-Gesellschaft (IFG) was founded in December of 1987 in the Federal Republic of Germany "in partnership with the Japanese Fichte Society." At a meeting of the membership held in conjunction with the recent Jena conference (September 1994), Prof. Wolfgang Schrader was re-elected for a second term as president of the IFG. Elected to the expanded board of directors were Profs. Helmut Girndt, Peter Oesterreich, and Marek Siemek. Prof. Wolfgang Janke was elected Honorary President. The Internationale Fichte-Gesellschaft sponsors frequent meetings and conferences in Germany and other European countries (see below) and also publishes the journal Fichte-Studien, plus a series of supplemental monographs (Fichte-Studien, Supplementa). Annual membership dues are 30 DM. For further information contact Prof. Helmut Girndt, Dorfstraße 9, 40629 Düsseldorf, Federal Republic of Germany.
